Versatile nylon, the polyamide fiber created as a synthetic silk when natural silk became scarce during wartime, has been revitalized in the 21st century. While nylon has long been used for jacket shells and athletic shorts, it has not seen much use for full-length pants until recently. But if you think nylon pants are just for wind and rain protection, it is time to take another look.

Nylon in your summer active wear and travel wardrobe is a good choice. In addition to the fashionable look of fine silk for casual elegance indoors, nylon pants are also available in cargo-style with a brushed look and stain-resistant finish for active outdoor wear. Nylon is comfortable, cool, and relatively wrinkle-free. Rinsing out your wardrobe while traveling is a snap and nylon does not absorb water, allowing it to dry quickly.

Nylon clothing is cool, because it transmits heat readily. Nylon is the obvious choice for warm weather. For cool, wet weather, nylon wind pants with a water-resistant or waterproof coating can be worn as an outer layer to protect oneself from hypothermia. One of the advantages of nylon pants is that it is highly abrasion-resistant so clothing keeps looking new longer. But your skin is not abrasion-resistant. When you are selecting nylon pants for active wear, look for styles with a mesh lining. Nylon is a smooth fiber and tends to chafe if in direct contact with the skin in areas that constantly rub against it.
