There are all kinds of different jewelry boxes on the market to choose from in all different shapes, sizes, styles and constructed of many different types of materials and they all serve the same purpose; to protect, organize and even to show off your jewelry collection. Deciding which one is the right one for you or someone else will take some thought and careful consideration. Following are a few things to think about:

  • Know your audience – One of the first things that you need to consider is who you are buying the box for. Knowing your audience is vital. If you are buying for yourself, it will be easy to determine your taste and style preferences. If however you are purchasing for someone else, it may benefit you to speak with someone that knows them well. Take their current décor into consideration before making your purchase. For instance, you do not want to purchase a Victorian style jewelry box for someone that has a contemporary décor in their home. Knowing the age of the person you are buying for is also important. You do not want to purchase a pink plastic jewelry box for an adult or a beautiful and delicate ceramic box for a young child.
  • Material – The next step in the determining which jewelry box to purchase is to decide on the material the box will be constructed from. Wooden jewelry boxes are by far the most popular and chances are good that you can find a wooden jewelry box that goes with any décor. However, if you know what type décor you are purchasing for and trying to match, you may find for instance that a leather jewelry box will compliment a contemporary décor better than a wooden jewelry box would.
  • Jewelry collection size – It is important to know what size jewelry collection you are purchasing a jewelry box for. If you get one that is too small you may have already doomed your gift from every being used or appreciated. Knowing the size of the collection you are purchasing for will ensure that you purchase something that will at a minimum meet their current needs and hopefully provide them with room to grow their collection in the future.
  • Lining – Taking the lining of a jewelry box into consideration is also a good idea. If you are purchasing a jewelry box for someone that collects silver jewelry exclusively, then it would benefit them to have a box with an anti-tarnish lining. Additionally, knowing which linings are best, such as suede or felt, will ensure that you do not purchase something that may wear quickly such as velvet or satin.
  • Construction – As always you want to make sure that you purchase a quality jewelry box, one that will last a lifetime or more. Be careful to evaluate the craftsmanship. Take a look at the hinges, are they cheap? Is the lining fastened well? Are there any decorations that are merely glued on and likely to fall off quickly? Taking a close look at the construction of the jewelry box and thinking about its quality will help you make a good decision.
